Kids who are even a little overweight are likely to be more hesitant to join a sport. They’re afraid they’ll be ridiculed or won’t be able to keep up with their teammates. However, parents shouldn’t hold back from doing their best to convince them to give playing soccer a shot.
Have a conversation with your team’s coach so he’s aware of your child’s self-consciousness. This will likely trigger the coach to be more considerate of your child’s emotional well-being. He must be positive and encouraging. With a positive approach, you and your coach can turn your player’s hesitation into excitement.
However, if your coach doesn’t have the sensitivity to handle this situation, talk to the league about trying out another team. Your child shouldn’t have to pay the price for an insensitive individual.
