Are you planning on taking your child and their AYSO buddies out to trick or treat this year? Trick or treating is one of the most exciting times in a young child’s life, but like anything else, can be dangerous. Check out our four safety tips below to help you have a safe and memorable night with your child:
1. Wear comfy shoes: After walking nearly a mile away from your house, the last thing you want is sore feet for you and your child the whole way home! Make sure your children wear comfortable shoes that will also keep their feet warm throughout the night. Make sure your child’s shoes offer the proper support and double tie those shoe laces!
2. Plan your route in advance: Trick or Treating can take you many streets away from your original starting point and as the night continues, the streets will get darker. To avoid getting lost, be sure to map out your route before you leave the house and stick to streets that you are familiar with.
3. Check your child’s candy: Don’t let your kids eat any of the candy they’ve received until you have gone through their bags at home. Be sure to throw out any candy that isn’t in its original wrapper or if it looks like it’s been opened.
4. Avoid masks: Masks that cover your child’s face can make it very tough for them to see or even breathe through. A safe alternative for a mask is non-toxic make-up. Not only is it safer, but your child will be more comfortable.
